Continuing my quest for privacy, I have decided to give BT Sync a try for my personal documents. I have moved all of my personal documents off of Dropbox. The only things left there are apps that use it to sync data/settings. I will work on those as I go. The iOS app is nice and it is fairly easy to use on my Mac so I am happy with that. Continuing from here, I found a couple of really neat posts from people thinking the same thing I am. First, from Al3x helps you set up your own personal cloud. The second, from Steven Frank follows him as he researches the available options to build his own. Another option I have been considering is to put Mac OS X Server on my iMac and host it all myself. So many choices.

Privacy and the NSA ⇒

All this NSA snooping news has really made me think hard about where my data is located and who has access to it. Major data stores, for me: * Dropbox (most of my personal documents) * Evernote * Email (Fastmail, whose main server is in the NY) * iCloud For Dropbox, I'm either going to encrypt it (Knox or Espionage) or get a File Transporter. Don't know what to do with my Evernote data...ideas? I'm thinking about moving my email to a non-US host, maybe Hover? Their servers are in...

Backups - the hard choices ⇒

I'm a huge proponent of proper backups (automatic, redundant and tested) but doing it "right" is very hard. My current setup: 1. local, hourly Time Machine backup 2. manual, monthly SuperDuper! backup stored in my safe-deposit box 3. automatic, nightly Arq backup With this setup, I can recover from just about any catastrophe and all my data is secured. My Arq backup is encrypted locally and stored on Amazon's Glacier service so I am not worried at all about someone getting my...
