Crunchy of Pig ⇒
Don't ask me what this is. It was on a menu in a Mexican restaurant. I didn't dare try it.
Posado Amazonas was our jungle lodge and it was absolutely fantastic.Check it out!
After we were picked up at the airport in Puerto Maldonado, we drove for about half an hour to the river then took a long motorized canoe along the Tambopata river to the lodge. En route we were given snacks (granadillas and tiny bananas) and a boxed lunch which was delicious fried rice neatly packaged in a banana leaf. On arrival at the lodge, we had fresh fruit juice of some description and were shown to our rooms after a brief orientation.
Skipping the details of having to change rooms because we really didn't want a room with three twin beds.
The matrimonial room we eventually ended up in was lovely. It had three walls. The fourth wall was about a meter away from the jungle and was wide open. There was a hammock in our room beside the open side of the room and mosquito nets over the bed. The room was lit by candles and kerosene lanterns at night. This would be romantic except for the fact that the walls are only 2.5 meters high...not much in the way of privacy.
Our first adventure was to visit the 37meter canopy tower where we were above the tree line. We saw some vultures and some macaws flew right past us. The view was spectacular. When we walked back it was quite dark which offered a totally different perspective to the jungle.
After a fantastic 7:00 supper and a Pisco Sour we hit the sack at about 8:00 in anticipation for the 4:00 start the next morning. Fell asleep quickly to the sound of the jungle.
Next morning Erin was so sick again he couldn't get out of bed, poor guy. I went for the morning activity anyway which was a pontoon ride on a lake. We saw loads of different birds and some giant river otters. It was a pretty cool way to see some wildlife. Later that day we went to a medicine trail to learn about medicinal plants. The first plant we saw was Para Para which literally means Get up Get up...it's a natural viagra. Nice!
Next day Erin was felling better. We went to visit a clay lick and saw and heard hundreds of green parrots and parakeets. The noise was more impressive than the visual. This day was mostly jungle walks including a night walk where we saw a rather large spider devouring a rather large dragonfly. We had frogs in our shower.
Today we departed the lodge at 6:00 and returned to Cusco feeling very relaxed but with renewed altitude symptoms. We visited the Inca museum which was interesting and met a couple of Canadians. We have reconfirmed all our flights for tomorrow (yay! we're all set!) and we are on our way home.
So this is my final entry in the Peru blog. Thanks for reading! I hope you have enjoyed it!
See you on Saturday!
