Guy LaFleur and the Quest for the Perfect Baguette ⇒
Ah the baguette; a staple in the french diet. Each day the locals walk to their favourite patisserie, purchase "une baguette s'il vous plait" (standarized price .70 Euros), break off the end to make sure it is suitable and merrily walk home again, baguette under arm, smoking a cigarette.
But alas all baguettes are not created equal, oh no, which is why our trusty travelling companion Guy La Fleur is on a quest in search of the perfect baguette.
The Baguette petal scale is as follows: 1 petal = stale baguette more suitable for use as a night stick 2 petals = a little dry, obviously made from frozen dough 3 petals = the average baguette from a large super market. It will do in a pinch 4 petals = crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside. Made from fresh dough. 5 petals = same as 4 petals but still warm out of the oven!
Locals break off the end of the baguette to see if it is a good one. Only a small amount should break off and it should be quite crunchy around the outside. Mmm mm c'est bien!
