‘Nother Poker Tourney ⇒

March 19th, 2005 by

I thought I would try to capitalize on my previous poker tournament run by going in another tournament. This time the buy-in was only $30, so I figured it wasn't too much of a risk.

I should have known that the night wasn't going to turn out well when the address listed for the game was wrong! The game was hosted at a huge apartment that held well over 50 people. To top it all off the music was really loud and the chairs where quite uncomfortable. So, I didn't feel that good about the evening and I guess it showed.

I managed to go through my first $1000 in chips pretty quickly, so I re-bought in for another $20. This time I did a little bit better, but I was sitting at a table with a couple of good players and I didn't hit many cards. My chip count slowly dwindled until there were 17 of us left (out of 30). I hit a pair of 9s so I went all in pre-flop as I was very short on chips and I needed to catch a break. I got one person to call, and he had A-Q off-suit. This is about even odds, with me being a slight favourite (about 55-45). The flop came K-10-2, which increased his odds because now any A, K, or J (for the straight) beat me. And wouldn't ya know, hey got the jack on the turn.

Oh well, I don't mind getting beat when I make the correct play.
