Our BBQ has been getting steadily worse over the past couple of years. At first I thought it was the bricks, so last year I got new ones. That didn't help and the problem got worse. Now there was only heat on the far sides. At this point I was resigned to buying a new BBQ.

As a last ditch effort I decided to take apart the BBQ to see if I could figure out what was broken. It does turn out I didn't have to take apart the WHOLE BBQ to get at the broken part, but how was I supposed to know that? After dismantling the darn thing, it was pretty easy to see that the burner was completely rusted out and was the cause of our (very) uneven burning.

Now that I found the offender, was it replacable? If so, was it affordable and if so, would I be able to put it all back together again?

To my great surprise, the answers were yes, yes and yes!! I did manage to lose 3 screws, only two of which were important, but other than that it all got re-assembled pretty well. I did clean the entire unit and remove 5 years of crud and build up so hopefully that will help as well.

In the end we spent about $150 on the original BBQ and $50 now, so if we get another year or two out of it that is a pretty good investment, dontcha think?

And we probably saved $300 or so that we can now use to get our garage door working. The old city-boy me would have just bought a new one...quite the personal growth, eh?
