Review: Phone Booth ⇒

April 5th, 2003 by

Friday night we went to SilverCity to see Phone Booth. The simple summary is that Stuart answers a ringing phone in a phone booth, and the guy on the other says that if he hangs up, he will kill him!

The main character, Stu, is played to perfection by Colin Farrell. Stu is so slimy as sterotypical NY publicist. The second star is Keifer Sutherland's. Most of the time you only hear him. He plays a wonderful villian though...physically scary and psychologically scary. He completely messes with Stu. His goal is to get Stu to admit to himself and his wife what kind of man he really is.

95% percent of camera time is on Stu in the phone booth. Periodically there was a split screen to show several other characters and their stories. I found it surprising that so much story could be told with just one set, and one on-screen character. Colin Farrell was awesome!! You end up really feeling for his character, who is quite pathetic. And well, is there another actor you plays evil so well as Keifer...he is frighteningly believable. Although this movie is obviously implausible, it is not impossible so that I was not distracted by story...seemed believable enough.

A small footnote...this movie's release was delayed twice...once around Sept. 11th and then again around the time the snipers were in eastern US. I'm glad they released it though....well worth seeing.
