Tech update ⇒
A couple of technology issuea: a hard drive error and a broken phone. Last weekend, on my way back here from San Jose, I broke the antennae on my phone. Turns out that even though I never used tha antennae, it is needed! My reception for the last week has been terrible! I was analog in my own apartment! Yuck! This problem has been solved, however. The nice folks at Futuretel were able to fix my phone for the low, low price of $30 plus GST. Now my phone is back to its usual great-reception self!! Ring, ring
The second issue is a little more worrisome (warning, geek talk ahead!). Yesterday I updated Quicktime and then rebooted my machine. Then I attempted to mount a disk image and nothing happened. Try again...nothing! Yikes! So, I open up Disk Utility to see if it can find a problem. It doesn't open! Double yikes! I quickly boot into single-user mode and run fsck on my drive. If find several overlapping extents (whatever those are!) but it cannot fix them. I run fsck a couple more times (I have been told repeated runnings sometimes fixes things) to no avail. Hmmmmmm. So I find what files are the problem ones and delete them as they are not crucial. Suddenly all is well again! Everything opens and runs as it should. Scary. So I am off to run some disk diagnostics to see if I can find any other problems. If my machine is unavailable, it is because I am performing some maintenance.
Update: All seems ok now. I have disabled journalling for the time being. See if that affects anything.
